Intent
At Radcliffe on Trent Infant and Nursery School it is our intent to teach children a knowledge rich Design and Technology curriculum that is ambitious and designed to build in knowledge content as children progress through school. All year groups will study Design and Technology according to the National Curriculum. The children will design and make products that solve real life problems within a variety of contexts. They will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through the evaluation of past and present Design and Technology it is our aim that the children will develop a critical understanding of Design and Technology’s impact on daily life.
Implement
At Radcliffe on Trent Infants and Nursery school we plan our DT projects within topics. Each project has a specific purpose. The projects follow the pattern of
Designing – after a mixture of whole class teaching and individual/group activities.
Making – either as individuals or in groups using a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials and kits, textiles, food ingredients, mechanical components and combining and joining materials whilst also following procedures for safety and hygiene.
Evaluating – we see the importance in allowing the children to reflect on and evaluate.
The teachers also ensure that the children increase and apply their knowledge and understanding when developing ideas.
We want our children to become creative problem solvers both as individuals and part of a team. We encourage our children to embody our core values of being resilient, resourceful, reflective and respectful during Design and Technology.
The children are exposed to a wide range of materials and resources and have lots of time to experiment with them in both of the Foundation stages as well as KS1 which helps the children to become more confident at deciding which is the most sensible material to use for each project.
