Communication & Language
Intent
Communication and Language is an integral part of our curriculum at Radcliffe on Trent Infant and Nursery School from the moment the children step through our doors in Nursery through to when they leave us at the end of KS1. It is embedded in our daily routines and practice and vocabulary is at the core of our subjects.
Implementation
Children in Y2 participate in whole class reading which allows them to explore, discuss and immerse themselves in texts which offers opportunity to widen their vocabulary and speaking and listening skills. This also allows them to embed their comprehension skills.
In EYFS we follow the Ruth Miskin 'Talk Through Stories' programme, which similarly allows children the chance to immerse themselves in text including oral rehearsal of a story, develop character recognition, extend vocabulary with the introduction of new words and comprehension of what is happening in the story.
Also in EYFS, daily singing is very important to us. Our staff understand that Nursery Rhymes form the base for a wide and rich vocabulary. Therefore, we follow a Nursery Rhyme Progression document which follows children through from Nursery into Reception and ensures that they leave EYFS with a solid knowledge of a range of rhymes and songs.
