Phonics
Intent
At Radcliffe on Trent Infant & Nursery School, we aim for all children to learn to read by the end of Key Stage 1. Our children will be fluent readers who self-monitor, self-correct, understand what they are reading and read for pleasure and enjoyment.
Implementation
Here at Radcliffe on Trent Infant and Nursery School we follow the Ruth Miskin ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics programme to enable our children to learn the skills needed for reading and to begin to apply those skills to writing.
Phonics lessons involve teaching children to:
Link a sound to each written letter shape (grapheme)
Know the sounds that two or three letters together make, such as /th/, /igh/ or /ch/. We call these ‘Special Friends’.
Orally blend using what we call ‘Fred Talk’ and segment using ‘Fred Fingers’
Segment the sounds in a word using Fred Fingers and then write each corresponding letter to spell words “big” broken down into “b-i-g”
Through diligent monitoring every 6 week children access quality first phonics teaching from highly skilled practitioners who are aware of gaps and next steps for each individual child in their group.
Impact
Children leave our school with the necessary skills to read competently across the curriculum. They are adept to reading in different contexts and they foster a love of reading which their acquired phonics skills will unlock. We ensure that children are given the best chance at success in their future career with a good base of phonic knowledge to build on.
